The Difference Of Race By Jared Gardner - 1342 Words

Identifying interesting or insightful pieces of the text: When reading The Difference of Race I found it particularly interesting that the South would go as far as to consider themselves a different race from the North. The article specifies why they most likely decided to do this, â€Å"As Jared Gardner has accurately observed, â€Å"growing regional divisions between North and South prompted metaphors of race to describe distinctions that were regional, political, economic—anything but racial† (Watson, 11). I find it interesting that this group of people based such importance on race that they felt they needed to be made into their own singular race to look better than not only the negro but also the North. It seems that this indicates that they not only wanted the importance and authority they had over colored people but they needed to also expand that control over the Northern people by trying to create their own race and then assert that it was already better than the other existing races. It was insightful to see that t he South was this concerned about the way they were viewed and that they were in a position of power and prestige. The piece of the text titled, â€Å"Reflections on Law, Culture, and Slavery†, that I found most insightful and interesting was the evidence that people of color were taking action to influence the outcome of their sales, the sales of their loved ones, and other aspects of their commercial use. It is clear from other historical evidence that slaves were

The Issue Of Gun Control - 1089 Words

Literature Review There is quite a bit of prior research done on gender differences in regard to gun control. The following articles used all help to provide support for the hypothesis that in a comparison of individuals, women are more likely to support stricter gun control laws than men. Most of the articles use polling to help prove this hypothesis, and some even help explain what might cause women to be more supportive of stricter gun control and why this is significant. One article that has research on the subject is from the nationaljournal.com, and it addresses a 2013 NBC/Wall Street Journal poll that shows that 65 percent of women favor stronger gun laws, compared to only 44 percent of men. These numbers support the hypothesis but the article tries to dive into why gender is related to gun control. The article explains that men are three times more likely to own guns than women and that opinions on the effectiveness of gun laws vary greatly depending on whether you own a gun or if there is on e in your house. Therefore an argument can be made that women are more likely to support stricter gun laws because they are less likely to own a gun. The article then also brings up a key counter point that maybe women are just more likely to not own a gun because they are more likely to not support gun ownership. Overall this article reveals data that supports the hypothesis while at the same time helps to better understand the relationship between gender and gun control.Show MoreRelatedGun Issue And Gun Control1401 Words   |  6 PagesUniversity, Gun Politics has been a course I have aspired to take. Methodical Reflection Nursing and Health Care

Questions: 1. Make a comparative discussion of the five overall study design (research designs). Give examples of suitable data collection methods for each of the five study design.2. Explain the goals variance and standard deviation and discuss how they are used in the quantitative method. Answers: 1.The research design refers to the overall approach adopted by the researcher to carry out the research study. In order to carry out the research in an effective manner, it is considered crucial to opt for the appropriate research design. There are various research designs such as experimental design, cross-sectional design, longitudinal design, case study, and comparative design (Taylor, 2006). Depending upon the nature of research and the peculiarities of the research work, the researcher identifies appropriateness of a particular research design. The experimental design is considered appropriate when the research involves some experimental work. The experimental design provides for the plans to be drawn to collect the data and perform analysis using different variables (Taylor, 2006). It could be said that the experimental design is a layout of the overall plan drawn by the researcher. The depth and quality of analysis depends upon the experimental research design chosen by the researcher. In the experimental research design, the data is collected by the primary data collections methods namely survey or interview (Taylor, 2006). The experiments are then performed on the data collected through survey or experiments. Another more commonly used research design is the cross-sectional design. The cross-sectional research design is suited most in the case of research being conducted in the social or medical areas. In the cross-sectional research design, the data collected belongs to different groups. Further, the data collection method used in this type of research design is observations. An example of cross-sectional research study could be the study on the cancer diagnosis on the different age people (Taylor, 2006). Apart from the above, another most frequently used research design is the longitudinal design. This type of research design is considered to be suitable for the research study conducted to explore the behavior of the individuals at different stages over the time span of their life (Bryman and Bell, 2015). The longitudinal research differs from cross-sectional research in the sense that the former studies one group of individuals whilst the later studies more than one group of individuals. The data collection method used in the longitudinal research is observation. Further, case study research design is also popular. In this case, the research is conducted to study a particular case study and find out the facts based on that study. The scope of research is very limited in the case of case study research. The case study differs from other researches in terms of its scope which is narrow as compared to experimental and other quantitative researches. The data for research is collected fr om the case study itself, thus, the method of data collection would be said to be the documents review (Bryman and Bell, 2015). In addition to the above discussed research designs, there is one more popular research design namely comparative research design. The researcher adopts comparative research design when the research is being conducted to compare two variables such as culture of two countries. The data collection methods applied in case of comparative research design could be primary such as survey or secondary such as documents review. However, care is required when collecting data in comparative research that the data attributes must be comparable with each other (Bryman and Bell, 2015). 2. The variance and standard deviation are the statistical computations which are used in the quantitative researches to analyze and interpret the data. The standard deviation is computed to find that the gap in the values from the mean of those values. In other words, the standard deviation is computed to find out the dispersion of the values from the mean (Fallon, 2016). Further, the variance is also used for the same purposes for which standard deviation is used. The variance is computed by taking the square of standard deviation. The standard deviation and variance both are used in the quantitative research to establish relationships between different data values of the data set (Fallon, 2016). In analyzing the quantitative data collected through survey, interview, or document review, the standard deviation is computed (Fallon, 2016). Further, the standard deviation is also used as the measure of risk in the research studies conducted in the financial sector. In terms of return on stock, the standard deviation measures the volatility of the returns which signifies the risk. Thus, the use of standard deviation is critical in the quantitative research studies (Fallon, 2016). References Bryman, A. and Bell, E. 2015. Business Research Methods. Oxford University Press. Vix Records Coffee Bandwagon

Question: Case Overview Vix Records is considering placing recorded music into a non-traditional channel of distribution. Specifically, we are considering selling recorded music through Java Wheels, a mobile coffee retailer. Java Wheels tends to sell to younger consumers. And, younger consumers tend to be heavy users of recorded music. So, there appears to be some strategic fit there. But, our corporate parent owns a coffee retailer (Frankies Caf). Frankies tends to sell to older consumers. But, we are encouraged to partner with our sister companies. So, partnering with Java Wheels may cause problems internally in our broader corporation. Finally, existing brick-and-mortar record stores may not like us seeking to expand the distribution of our products into non-traditional channels if it means we lessen their importance and, ultimately, their recorded music sales. So, do we risk alienating our existing retailers and possibly our related companies by seeking to expand the distribution of our product? Discuss on the following topics: 1. Consumer and Trade Promotions2. Channels of Distribution3. Retailer Mix4. Cross-Functional Efforts in Strategic Planning5. Strategic Planning6. Growth Strategies Answer: 1. Consumer and Trade Promotions Consumer and trade promotion are marketing strategies for short-term goal. Consumer promotions are used to increase brand awareness and market acceptance. It induces the customers to buy the product or services. Trade promotions are to help companies differentiate a product, increase product visibility, and increase the product purchase rate. There are various ways through which consumer and trade promotions can be done. The different consumer promotions are rebates, coupons, premiums, contests, reward, and free samples. Trade promotions activities are done focusing the retailers. Incentives are provided to encourage the encourage retailers to stock a product. It also includes trade contests, point of purchase, and push money, etc. Vix Records is a seller of recorder music through Java wheels. Java wheels is a mobile coffee retailer. The targeted customers of both Vix Records and Java Wheels are younger. So, it will be easy reach to maximum consumers. Using various consumer promotion s activities the brand awareness and market acceptance can be increased such as organizing music contests and rebating the music CDs along with coffee. Side by side, music can be played all time in their van to increase the sales. Vix Records should provide incentives to Java Wheels for that and also should offer a music system to Java Wheels. It will be beneficial for both Vix Records and Java Wheels to create the brand awareness and to increase the sales. 2. Channels of Distribution Channels of distribution are the paths or routes through which goods or service pass from producers to end user that mean consumers. It is also called as distribution network along which consist of wholesalers, selling agents and middleman. However, it is to be noted that the digital distribution channel will be more profitable, easier and shorter for Vix Recordss distributors, selling agents, consumers. This removes the role of wholesalers. The distribution channel path can be like the distributors can acquire the right for distributing the music from various web, sell that music on world wide web, from where the consumers can acquire the music or download through internet (Cianci). This is because, since the target customers of Vix Records are new generation people and they are more fascinated towards new devices like iPod, digital format, new devices, electronic payments due to busy lifestyle and dependence on web technologies. This digital distribution channel would give the oppo rtunity towards new levels (Dent). 3. Retailer Mix There exist six different elements of retail marketing mix for VixRecords (Cox and Brittain): Store Location: VixRecords should create a store that is quite convenient for the youngsters or the new generation people to visit at their leisure time like, near their universities or parks or near the cafeterias which they visit often during their leisure time. Merchandise assortment like providing different music chains like music or albums of different singers, discount music store that offering some amenities etc. Store ambience of Viz record can include wi-fi facility for the youngster and area to sit and chat with their friends, while listening to the latest songs of the singers. Further, they can also focus on changing the ambience of the store according to the festivals like Christmas, Valentines Day etc (Michman and Mazze). Customer Service like the company can provide replacement to the CDs or helping the youngsters with their queries 24X7. Price: Since the youngsters are mostly the college or school going students. They might not have enough money to buy all latest albums. So, the first thing that can be done is reducing the prices of the CDs or the albums they are looking for and also setting up a loyalty membership card for the returning customers. Communication with the customers can be done through mail and SMS about the latest availability in the store and also about the discount and offers. 4. Cross Functional efforts in strategic planning Viz Record need to coordinate with the operations of Java Wheels as they are also targeting the new generation. Collaborating the operations would help to assess the environment of the firm and also assess the supply chain of the organization which would help to determine the sustaining value. In other words, Viz Record needs to define the problems and also ascertain various options that would help to deal with the issues. Through integration of various operations like marketing, sales, distribution channel, finance and operation would help to plan different activities for meeting the rising demands of the young generation from the music industry (Oliva and Watson). 5. Strategic Planning In order to increase sales, Vix Records has to adopt several strategic plan such as Sell to Customer Need: In these digitalized days, majority of people listen music using several electronic devices such as mobile phone, laptop, music player, etc. However, in developing countries the trends of listen music via CDs continue. Therefore, Vix Records has to understand the needs and demands of customer especially the demands of young generation people. Majority of young people demands for hard rock music. Therefore, Vix Records has to stores CDs of hard rocking music in their stores. Development of Attitude: The staffs of employee within the stores along with store managers have to show polite behavior towards customers. When customer visit in the stores of Java Wheels they have to take care more and provide information about CDs individually. It cans help in motivating consumer and buying CDs from the store of Vix Records. 6. Growth strategies For improving the business profitability, engagement of customer is essential. However, in order to engage customer, Vix Records has to adopt several growth strategies in bith internally and externally. In order to improve the business organization has to develop and design new products such as music CDs of hard music, rock music, several types of pop songs, etc. Apart from that, organization has to provide discounts in their old CDs especially in the holidays. It can help in increasing sales because in holidays majority of customer visits in several store. Moreover, in order to increase sale, Vix Records has to involve more music player and provide the opportunities to customers for testing the music CDs. From the viewpoint of external growth, Vix Records has to involve strategy of joint ventures. Joint venture with the several restaurant organizations such as Dubai Creek Yacht Club, The Farm, etc will be better growth strategies because people mostly visit in restaurant industry rather than other. The Victorian Era essays

The Victorian Era essays Characteristics During the Victorian Era When imagining the Victorian Age, royalty, fancy lifestyles, and elaborate living often come to mind. However, during this same era, other lifestyles and conditions of a completely different nature were occurring. Many of the English people lived in poverty. Charles Dickens, one of the great writers of this period, described how it was to live during the Victorian Era. Although England grew from an agricultural to an industrial society, not all citizens benefited from this change. In addition, the undesirable health and medical environment plagued both the wealthy and the poor. Charles Dickens was a profound British writer who composed novels, short stories, dramatic works, poetry, and essays (Charles Dickens 1). He was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth England where he was the second of eight children (Perdue 1). His father John was a minor government official as a clerk in the Navy Pay Office: he was then transferred to Somerset House in London. The family moved to Chatham in the Medway Valley, where Charles experienced the most glorious part of his childhood (Perdue 1). After moving back to London, John Dickens had a tendency to live beyond his needs, spending all the money he earned, and was sent to Marshalsea debtors prison in 1824 (Charles (John Huffam) Dickens 2). Starting at an early age, Dickens was taught at home by his mother Elizabeth, and later attended a Dame school in Chatham. Even though he had received a decent education, he felt very unsuccessful since his sister Frances was winning awards studying at The Royal Academy of Musi c, while he was still a mere boy (Charles (John Huffam) Dickens 2). According to David Perdue, Charles was removed from school and sent to work at a boot-blacking factory earning six shillings a week to help support the family. Charles considered this the worst time in his life, which would...
